“You know, I have never once been a fan of that man.” Tara grumbles, topping my whiskey off.

I glance up to her for a second, debating being the crass bitch I am, or if I should take a moment to process what he’s just said. His little bitch put a spell on me. A spell that’ll kill me if I don’t get one of my relative’s bones?

I’m a fucking orphan! Where am I supposed to find one of their dead bodies? I was dropped off at an orphanage when I was a day old, in the middle of Missouri no doubt. I know nothing about my family, where I come from, what my parents were like, or if I had any siblings. Aurora had to have known this when she cast the spell, hoping it would kill me. It makes sense now, considering she muttered something about ‘we’ll see’ before I left the gardens.

“Neither have I,” I agree, running my index finger over the rim of my drink.

“What’s got you in such a tiff? Lookin’ like you’re in the deep thoughts and whatnot?” Tara says in her thick English accent.

I’ve known Tara and the Tate cousins for years now, since I was with Theo in the very beginning. If anyone will be able to help me get out of this mess, it’ll be the Tate family. “You have a moment to take a break?” I ask her, really hoping she can. I don’t know how much longer I’ll be able to keep it together. Even I break down every now and again, though I keep it hidden behind closed doors.

Tara nods, “Sure, give me one sec.” She waves her hand over to the bar where her sister, Tessa, is manning the bar. “Tes’, I’m going on my thirty. You hold down the fort.”

“No worries,” Tessa calls back as Tara takes a seat where Theo was a few short minutes ago. My little fox friend hops in my lap, rubbing his head against my hand. I wonder if he can feel the worries running through my mind, or if he realizes the level of fear I’m holding inside my body.

I found out I was a succubus when I was fifteen years old and kissed my boyfriend at the time, nearly killing him. I thought I was possessed, and so did my foster-family. They called in priests from Rome, using the church as a way to compel the demon from my body. But you can’t force an entity out when you are the entity. It’s how I managed to get on the streets, surviving for three years until Theo found me. I’d just turned eighteen and he was the first man who didn’t strike me as a total creep. I never accepted a ride from anyone before, but something about him, the way he looked at me with his soft eyes .
